Chapter 17

Ava

Night fell quickly, bringing with it the chill that only the desert knew. I couldn’t complain, though. With the excuse of nightfall and the liberty of our newfound closeness, I took the opportunity to huddle together with Rovik in the shadows of the cave. We were strangely familiar now, a connection that neither of us could possibly have anticipated, and yet one that felt so right, so comforting. We sat quietly, our bodies pressed together as if by instinct, the fire painting the cave walls with a faint orange glow.

I knew we had to figure out a way to get out of there, to free ourselves from the oppression of the Brotherhood and the mutinous Kremarians. But for now, I just savored that moment, basking in the sweet embrace of new love, knowing that the present would soon be replaced by a frightful future.

We remained silent, knowing that any words spoken would break the spell and force us to face the truth of our situation. Suddenly, I grew tense as I strained to hear what sounded like someone outside the cave. A moment later, it became unmistakable, and I felt Rovik tense up beside me. The sound of footsteps scraping against sand and rock emerged from the darkness.

Rovik was on his feet at once, and he instinctively stepped in front of me, as if to guard me from whatever intruder had stumbled upon our camp. Despite myself, I felt my heart race as I peered over his shoulder into the dark. In the dim firelight, I couldn’t see a thing, just an endless blackness that obscured whatever dangers lurked within.

For a moment, all I heard were shuffling footsteps, drawing ever closer through the dark. That and the pounding of my own heart. Then suddenly, Rovik’s voice cut through the silence.

“Show yourself!” he called into the shadows beyond the reach of the firelight.

The footsteps stopped for a moment, a pregnant pause filling the air before a stranger stepped forward into the light. I stared as Paige appeared out of the shadows, her long hair and mischievous eyes illuminated by the flames of our makeshift campfire. She strode forward, her face a mix of fear and hope.

Relief washed over me, and I almost laughed, adrenaline still coursing through my body and longing for release. Instinctively, I ran forward, hugging Paige tightly. I was not only relieved but overjoyed to have her familiar face there with us in the wilderness. I pulled away, barely able to contain my excitement at seeing one of my dearest friends again, just as Palik rushed in to see what the commotion was all about.

“How did you find us?” I asked incredulously.

Paige smiled sheepishly and pulled back, looking between me, Rovik, and Palik. “When I heard you had been rescued by a Kremarian, I figured someone in his ranks would eventually find him. So when I saw this one sneaking out into the wilderness,” she continued, gesturing to Palik, who looked suitably abashed at being called out like this, “I figured it was a lead worth following.
